May 10th Meeting Program:
The Design and Construction of Prefabricated Masonry
|
David Biggs, P.E., S.E.
Please join us for the last BEC Program before the summer break. Site-constructed masonry walls are often compared to prefabricated systems of concrete or metal panels. However, there are options for prefabricating masonry elements and wall panels. Prefabrication provides benefits to contractors, owners, architects, engineers and masons: potentially lower costs, improved quality of the masonry elements, increased construction speed, adaptability to field conditions, lighter weight, and reduced conflicts with other materials. Fabrication in a factory setting also allows masons year-round work without weather protection. This presentation will illustrate several prefabricated masonry systems being used in the United States. These systems use either clay or concrete masonry units and are applicable to single-story and multi-story construction. David Biggs, P.E., S.E. is a Principal of Biggs Consulting Engineering in Troy, New York. He specializes in forensic engineering; the evaluation, and restoration of historic structures; and the development of new masonry products. He is also Technical Director for Constructive LLC, a technology development firm that offers prefabricated masonry solutions. Biggs is a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and an Honorary Member of The Masonry Society. NEXT PROGRAM MEETING: The Design and Construction of Prefabricated Masonry WHEN: Thursday May 10 at 4:30 pm, until about 6:15 WHERE: Birmingham Conference Center. COST: $5, paid at the door.
